‘Eleven years ago I moved to Leitrim. Water sports drew me here. The landscape and culture has always been a influence on me and hopefully you can see this in my work.’

"FIRE, EARTH, AIR, WATER" - No life without these elements, but once you combine them, you are truly playing with magic. In essence, the skill of a blacksmith lies in his understanding of the working of metal. When metal is heated it takes on a clay-like nature and this gives rise to an infinite array of shapes and forms. A richness of surface texture is achieved as a result of this shaping process, and from this, the subtle individuality of the smith may be witnessed. The ancient art of blacksmithing has been referred to as the "mother craft" of all civilizations. With an anvil and a hammer, a blacksmith can make everything he needs.

My interest and passion for forging metal began while studying furniture design at Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire. We were trained to look at different materials - wood, metal, glass - and to explore their different properties and processes. As a consequence of this, I began incorporating these materials in my work. After graduation, I spent time working with artist blacksmiths in England and the USA, with the intention of improving both my skill and my understanding of forged metalwork. I am now based in Kinlough, and my work as an artist blacksmith includes private and commercial commissions. I also design and produce a range of quality hand-forged products in limited editions. This collection is available in the Leitrim Design House, and the Kilkenny Shops nationwide.

I enjoy incorporating organic and Celtic mythology themes into my work and am continually being inspired by the rugged windswept landscapes around my Leitrim based studio.
